With the starry revival of Promises, Promises opening at the Broadway Theatre, we asked Broadway.com readers which of Kristin Chenoweth’s many prior roles on stage and screen is their favorite. The results are in, and Cunegonde of Candide has plenty of reasons to “Glitter and Be Gay.” In a surprise finish, the love interest to the title character in Leonard Bernstein's operatic musical—a role Chenoweth played in a 2004 concert with the New York Philharmonic and again in 2008 at the English National Opera—took top spot with a strong 34% of the vote.
Turns out Glinda, Chenoweth’s perky Wicked witch, wasn’t the most “Popular,” finishing in second place with 22% of the vote. Third place went to Olive Snook, the role that earned Chenoweth an Emmy last year for TV’s Pushing Daises, with 11%.
Chenoweth’s recent guest starring role as boozy but sweet April Rhodes on the hit show Glee took fourth place, with 9%, followed by her Tony-winning turn in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown (8%).
